In Chapter 18, Bud and the band get into two cars to drive for an hour and a half to north of Grand Rapids. During the car ride they talk and show each other some rocks that have writing in the back of them and then Bud showed Mr.C some that Bud had and Mr.C thought Bud stole them from the dead girls room. Mr.C found out it was actually some that Bud's mother gave him and then Mr.C realized he gave the rocks Bud has to his daughter and found out Bud is Mr.C's grandson.
In Chapter 19, when Herman E. Calloway found out Bud's mothers name he locked himself in his room and wouldn't come out. Mr. Jimmy and Miss Thomas took Bud to the kitchen and were making sure that Herman is Bud's grandfather and that there wasn't any mistake. Bud went into the room where Herman was to grab a picture of his mother to show Miss Thomas and Mr. Jimmy to see if its true and when Bud went into the room Mr. Calloway was crying while sitting in a little chair facing the front of the little mirror. Bud found out that Herman didn't know anything about him because Bud's mother left. When Bud showed Miss Thomas the picture of his mother they knew that was Herman's daughter. Last of all Bud started practicing the saxophone the band gave him.
