  • Oh, okay. I guess we can talk about it later…
  • Hey Taylor, I was wondering if you would be willing to go get tested with me for STD’s.
  • Passive Communication
  • Passive Approach
  • Or Maybe we Don't
  • Can we not do this right now? If you think I’ve been sleeping around then you’re wrong and its a waste of my time.
  • If I can’t trust you to do this small thing for me then I guess maybe I can’t trust you with bigger things either. I'm Leaving.
  • No, of course I don’t, but this is important so we are doing it. Call off work right now. Take a half day.
  • Taylor we need to talk. We are going to get tested for STDs tomorrow at 4:30. I already made an appointment.
  • Aggressive Approach
  • I can't just do that. I have meetings.
  • I have work Tommy we can’t. Plus, we don’t even need that. You don’t think I’ve been cheating, do you?
  • I feel discouraged when you get angry so quickly because I feel like you don’t take time to consider my opinions. I would like for us to go together when you have the time off and have thought this through.
  • I heard that we could be asymptomatic and we have been sexually active in the past so I would like to be safe.
  • Taylor, can we talk about going to get STD tested
  • Assertive Approach
  •  No, I am loyal to youcompletely so there is noreason for us to go. I don’t haveany symptoms anyway. I can’tbelieve you are suggesting thisright now!
  •  I can see that it is important to you and I want this relationship so lets go.
  • I don’t have an STD so leave it.
  • Tommy and Taylor have been engaging in sexual activities for about 2 months now. Tommy has just been educated on the nature of STD/STIs and feels the need to get tested because both Taylor and Tommy have had sexual partners in the past...
  • Now he is concerned that one of them could be asymptomatic for a STD/STI. He suggests to Taylor that they get tested together but she doesn’t think it is necessary...
  • She gets defensive and accuses Tommy of thinking she is cheating. Depending on the level of passive, aggressive, and assertive  behavior used he has different approaches and responses.
