It is June 27th, a warm summer day and the children are happily gathering stones in the village square.
Sorry I was late. I was doing housewife and mom stuff.
He didn't have enough time to draw fairly! It's not right!
The lottery was going great until Bill Hutchinson's name was drawn from the black box. Tessie, Bill's wife, was complaining that her husband didn't have enough time to draw fairly, saying. "It isn't fair"
Be a good sport Tessie. We all took the same chance.
The Hutchinson family is called up to the old, black box. Mr. Summers puts five slips of paper into the box.
Oh, no. I really don't want to get chosen.
The Hutchinson family.
Dave was collecting the rocks with the other kids. Finally seeing his mom arrive just in time right before the lottery seemed to start. He waved at her then put his last rock down running away from the rest of thr children to his mom.
Tessie draws the slip of paper with the black dot on it.
Wait please no, not my mom!
Duke stood there listening to his mom complain and demand the lotter to be re-drawn but he was to scared to do anything. He didn't think much about the lottery because he never expected for their family to be picked or at least he's never experienced.
Tessie begins to scream that it isn't fair, that it isn't right. While she is screaming, everyone begins to circle around her, getting ready to stone her.
It's not fair! It's not right! We should stop killing people for no reason!
Duke was standing there waiting for his turn to pick out of the black box and he was terrified. He was going to be upset no matter who gets it, it's his family. His mom or dad or sister he didn't want anyone nor himself to get the black dot.
As Tessie screams, a stone hits her in the head. Old Man Warner is loving this and and encourages the villagers to keep throwing stones at Tessie.
How could they just stand there and throw rocks at her. How could they just kill someone like it's nothing?
He was stunned. Everyone kept saying his mom's name. He couldn't believe it and there was nothing he could do. He tried screaming at them to keep them away, but everyone understood and knew what was going to happen.
Why me! Why me!!
Duke fell to the floor as he saw everyone crowding his mom. He knew she was scared because he was too. He was just a little boy and know he about to witness his mom die. He doesn't understand why the lottery is still a thing.
He ran, Duke ran. He couldn't dare see his mom get killed. He was frustrated. "How could they just stand there?" He vowed to never forgive them and make them regret ever doing the lottery.
