Storyboard Text

  • My first son was born. Let's call him Rolihlahla.
  • My baby 's birthday is July 18,1918.
  • We live in three small houses to cook in one ,keep in another and sleep in the last.
  • You have to go to school at first.
  • Yes, Mom.
  • Chief Gadla Mandela was his first son with his third wife, Nosekeni Fanny. Nelson Mandela was born on July 18th 1918 in the South African village of Mvezo. His birth name is Rolihlahla or Buti.
  • Now your name is Nelson Mandela.
  • Yes, teachel.
  • Nosekeni Fanny and her family moved to Qunu but Chief Mandela didn't come with them. The family was poor now but Buti was a happy child. He helped to care the family's animals and loved to play the other children in this village.
  • Oh! my poor son.
  • My Dad became sick and died.
  • At the age of 7, he was a clever boy and his mother decided to send him to school. Buti was one of the first in the family to have attended school.
  • Welcome to my house. We'll stay together, Nelson.
  • At school Buti got new name, Nelson from his teacher because the teachers at the school gave the students European names. 
  • When Nelson was ten years old, his father died. So, his mother didn't want her son to spent the rest of his early years with no father in his life. It was time for him to leave Qunu.
  • Nelson followed his mother to Mqhekezweni. The white houses in the middle of this village were bigger and more beautiful than any in his old villages. They met Chief Jongintaba and lived together at his white house.
