Thomas didn't run from the Grievers like Minho did, he kept brainstorming ideas of how to hide and he never left wounded, Alby behind. He picked Alby up and saved him, along with himself. He never gave up on his friend.
Even though Thomas, Teresa and Newt couldn't figure anything out about the maze, Thomas still struggled to find out what the Maze could be representing or hiding. He never gave up on trying to figure how to save his friends and himself.
