Phase 1After getting my dog I wanted it to be able to sit on command whenever I asked. I started by getting a treat and asking her to sit. However, she did not cooperate at the start. The neutral stimulus is asking Macy to sit because in the beginning there is no response. Unconditioned stimuli is the treat due to the fact that the treat will trigger a response from the dog. The unconditioned response is Macy standing when I give her a treat and tell her to sit down.
Sit for a treat!
What?
Phase 2After trying to get Macy to sit while holding a treat over and over again her unconditioned response of standing is still there. But finally, her issue of standing when given a treat was gone. She reacted in the right way by sitting when given a treat. She would only get the treat if she sat, so after a while she released she would only get a treat if she sat. Macy correlated the word sit with treat.
Yes! I'm sitting.
You want a treat? Sit!
Phase 3Conditioned response is Macy sitting without having a treat in hand. The conditioned stimulus is the word "sit" because now she is conditioned to sit because she believes she is going to get a treat. Now, whenever Macy is told to sit she sits because of these different phases.
Where's my treat?
Macy sit!
