Oedipus swears again that he will find out the truth, no matter how vile it is. His men lead in an old shepherd who is afraid to answer Oedipus' questions. But he finally tells Oedipus the truth. He did give the messenger a baby boy, and that baby boy was Laius's son, the same son that Laius and Jocasta left to die on the hillside to avoid the prophecy. Oedipus is devastated and exits the palace, grabs a sword and searched for Jocasta in order to kill her.
What have I done...
...The baby was from the house of Laius. It was given to me so that....I would kill it. For fear of evil prophecies that he would kill his parents.
Upon entering Jocasta's chamber, Oedipus finds that she has already hanged herself. He takes the gold brooches from her dress and gouges his own eyes, saying that he who has seen and done such vile things shall never see again.
I will no longer see the evils that I have done or suffered! Such disgrace!
Creon arrives, having heard the whole story, and begs Oedipus to come back inside, where he won't be seen by the people.
What real faith can you have in me? Now that I have been found false to you.
I have not come to mock you. Please, come back into the house, for it is right for only blood relatives to see and hear familial evils.
Oedipus begs Creon to let him leave the city, and Creon tells him he must consult Apollo first. Oedipus says banishment was what he declared for the killer, and Creon agrees.
The prophecy was made clear! Destroy the patricide! The wretched! ME!
It was said thus, but still, where we stand, it is better to learn what must be done.
Before Oedipus leaves forever, he asks to see his daughters and begs Creon to take care of them.
My poor little girls...worry over them, I beg you, let me touch them with my hands and mourn our woes. Please, my lord! I'd held them as I did when I could see...
Oedipus is led away, while Creon and the girls go back into the palace. The Chorus, alone, laments Oedipus' tragic fate and the doomed lineage.
Behold this Oedipus, who solved the riddle and was a most powerful man, whose fortunes all the citizens watched with emulation, how deep the dire misfortune has taken him! It is necessary to call no man blessed as we await the final day, until he has reached the limit of life and suffered nothing grievous.
