Sixty-three year old Yazmin Santiago walks into her family clinic for her annual check-in. The nurse calls her name and leads her into the hallway where he takes her weight, height, blood pressure, and temperature. The nurse then asks her to sit in a chair in the hallway to begin the NeuroStroll exam.
NeuroStroll Test Results Flagged
First, the nurse helps Yazmin put on the virtual reality headset. Once on, Yazmin completes a series of tasks, including focusing on a single illuminated light, distinguishing objects and faces, and reading words displayed onto her screen.
Report Findings
The nurse then removes the headset and places two small stamp-sized sensors on her shins. Once they are on, Yazmin stands up, walks ten feet to a marked line, turns around, walks back to the chair, and sits down. The nurse removes the sensors and they walk into the evaluation room where Yazmin awaits her primary care provider, Dr. Shariq.
Report Follow Up
When Dr. Shariq arrives, she shares that Yazmin’s blood pressure, pulse, and weight all look great, but comments that her NeuroStroll test results have changed since last year.
She explains that her walking patterns show less stability and increased variability compared to her previous tests, which could be either a natural result of muscular decline with age or early signs of a disease, most notably Parkinson’s disease.
Dr. Shariq asks Yazmin a series of questions to gauge whether she is showing the early symptoms of PD and learns that Yazmin has been experiencing muscle rigidity and occasional difficulty writing and typing, both indicators of PD.
