  • Wasn't Hipparchus also known for his work on lunar and solar eclipses? Those phenomena provide further evidence for a spherical Earth and a heliocentric universe.
  • Yes, he explained how a lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, and a solar eclipse happens when the Moon comes between the Earth and the Sun.
  • Oh, I thought it was Anaxagoras who said the Earth was an oblate spheroid, slightly flattened at the poles and bulging at the equator. That's another evidence against the flat Earth theory.
  • So, all these ancient philosophers, mathematicians, and astronomers helped us understand that the Earth isn't flat, but a sphere, and they did all that before the invention of the telescope. That's really impressive.
  • Absolutely. It's amazing what they could discover just by observing the world around them..
  • And then there's Claudius Ptolemy and his Ptolemaic system, where the Earth is at the center and everything else revolves around it. Even though it's not accurate, it was widely accepted for many centuries and it still required a spherical Earth to work.
  • Exactly. The Ptolemaic system explained the rising and setting of the sun, the phases of the moon, and the daily and annual motion of stars, all of which provide evidence against a flat Earth.
