Storyboard Text

  • Today we will be following a mother and her toddler to see how parents can help develop their child’s language skills from day-to-day. Here you will see the mother, Jenny, interacting with her son, Matthew, in the morning. One of the easiest ways to help a child is to talk to them throughout the day.
  • Yes, I'm hungry!
  • Good morning Matthew, are you ready to eat breakfast?
  • Giving the child time to understand what you are saying and respond will help these skills develop and grow.
  • What would you like to eat today? Mommy can make you pancakes and eggs or oatmeal with yogurt.
  • Pancakes!
  • During breakfast, Jenny talks to Mathew about what they are going to do throughout the day. She continues to ask him questions to ensure he understands and responds.
  • Later today we are going to the grocery store. After we eat, would you like to go to the living room to play for a while?
  • Yes, can mommy play too?
  • Another helpful activity parents can do with their child is as simple as listening to music. Listening to action songs can help the child connect an action to a word.
  • If you're happy and you know it clap your hands!
  • 1, 2, 3 , 4!
  • After singing and dancing with Mathew, Jenny took out his blocks to play. Building blocks can help children learn new adjectives, colors, and numbers.
  • Can you count how many red blocks we have?
  • While they were at the grocery store, Jenny was pointing out different products at the store and asking Mathew what they were. This helps him practice his language skills.
  • That's a pear mommy.
  • Do you know what kind of fruit she has Mathew?
