- The Monsters are Due on Maple Street theme:
- "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is, mankind is it's own worst enemy. When the power goes out, everyone goes crazy and assumes the worst. They think unreasonable things and start blaming each other for what has happened. Everyone turns into a suspect and nobody can be trusted. Neighbors turn against each other. (P.85) Since the neighborhood had been close and known each other for so long, they shouldn't have been so quick to point fingers at one another. The second piece of evidence is when Charlie shot Pete Van Horn. (P.82) He was too scared to even think about a reasonable explanation for who the dark figure could have been. Moreover, at the end of the story, the aliens discuss how the humans destroyed themselves. The aliens didn't have to do anything, all they did was turn of their power for a few hours and sat back while the humans fought with themselves.(P.86) Therefore, mankind is it's own worst enemy.
