At the beginning of this book, we are introduced to Bruno, our main character, his sister, Gretel, and their parents. Bruno is the son of Ralf, a Nazi soldier. In January of 1943, his father was promoted to commander of the death camp located in Auschwitz. Due to this, Bruno and his family must move from Berlin to their new home.
I don't want to leave my friends!!
You are going to help Maria pack stuff up!
Where are you from?
Cool, I am from Berlin.
I came from a part in Poland.
Mid 1943When Bruno arrived at his house, he found that there was no one he could play with. In his free time, he went to go search for something to do around his house. When looking he saw a boy near the fence. His name was Schmel. They would talk together, and became very close.
January 1944It has been a while living in the new house, and Bruno's mother and father told him that the family is going to move back to Belin, but Schmel asked Bruno if he could help him find his father before they left. Bruno said yes, and the next day, Bruno snuck under the fence and went to go look. That same day, they were forced to march and were killed together by armed soldiers.
I think I should leave... it is not that friendly here.
