  • Tybalt and his Capulet friends surround Mercutio and Benvolio. Tybalt wants to talk to one of them but Mercutio becomes annoyed and starts to jeer/taunt them, itching for a fight. This altercation/taunting will lead to a fight between Tybalt and Mercutio.
  • “This shall determine that./ They fight. Tybalt falls./ Romeo, away begone! The citizens are up, and Tybalt is slain. Stand not amazed. The Prince will doom thee death”-Act 3 Scene 1 Lines 137-140
  • Romeo enters, and Tybalt calls him a scoundrel wanting to challenge him. Romeo is now married to Juliet and therefore is related to Tybalt, so he does not want to fight him. In Romeo’s place, Merucito challenges Tybalt to a duel. A fight between Mercutio and Tybalt will lead to the demise of either of them, which therefore will incite Romeo or others into joining the fight.
  • “And for that offence/Immediately we do exile him hence."-Act 3 Scene 1 Lines 196-197

  • Romeo interferes with the fight and tries to stop the duel. Tybalt gets a lucky jab into Mercutio while Romeo tries to stop it. Mercutio dies and curses both the house of Capulet and Montague for his death. Mercutio’s death will infuriate Romeo and spur vengeful attacks on Tybalt.
  • Romeo is furious because of his friend's death. To avenge Mercutio, Romeo fights Tybalt. At the end of the fight, Romeo is victorious and slays Tybalt. Benvolio tells Romeo to run away so that way he does not get in trouble. A fight between the families of Capulet and Montague has become forbidden and if a fight should occur both families will pay a heavy price.

  • Run now Romeo!
  • Prince Escalus arrives with Capulet and Montague and informs both of them that this is unacceptable for killing his cousin and they will be fined heavily. Prince Escalus reprimands the Montague family by banishing Romeo. For if Romeo were to ever be found in Verona will die on the spot. If Romeo is banished from Verona then this will make it increasingly challenging for Romeo and Juliet’s relationship.
