The First Nations needed to stop the Americans from expanding into their territory. This is because they believed the Americans would not care for their land andtraditional territories. It was also believed that the Americans would put an end to the fur trade, as they did not care for it.
The allied First Nations Tribes
The First Nations wanted to help them win the war, mostly because of their previous relationship. The First Nations were already good trading partners with the British and trusted the British more than the Americans. The British would also keep the fur trade and bring everything back to how it was before the war, or so it was believed.
The allied First Nations Tribes
Chief Tecumseh, The chief of the Shawnee Tribe, was a very significant person in the War of 1812. He made an important move by leading his confederacy into the war. Tecumseh believed that all the First Nations tribes in Canada needed to put their differences aside, and all fighttogether to protect their rights and native land.
The Ojibwa, Dakota, Odawa, Pottawatomi, Shawnee, Algonquin, Mohawk, Huron, and Abenaki all united to fight alongside the British against the common enemy: the Americans. Over 10,00 First Nations warriors joined the war, which greatly increased the number of people fighting for the British. Although not all tribes fought on the same side, most did so because they all wanted to protect their land.
