Storyboard Text

  • My nib broke! I don't have an extra!!
  • "This man was slim and wiry...plastered back with immense quantities of brilliantine (hair)...He sported a mustache...a thick orange hedge that sprouted and flourished between his nose and his upper lip"
  • Twitch, twitch
  • "Captain Hardcastle was sitting up in front of us...twitching his head and grunting through his nose...searching for mischief"
  • Hmph!
  • That was foolish to stub my nib on the table...
  • P: The author conveys that Captain Hardcastle's personality is strict, wild, and vain.
  • “Dobson ... Dobson ... Could you lend me a nib?"
  • I'm sure he's looking the other way...
  • E:For instance, Captain Hardcastle "Leapt to his feet...pointing at Boy", and Boy thinks, “Behind the mustache there lived an inflamed and savage face.”In my opinion, these come off as wild. He is strict as well since he doesn't listen to Boy's part of the issue (talking with Dobson, “Dobson ... Dobson ... Could you lend me a nib?”), Captain Hardcastle says “You’re talking! I saw you talking! Don’t try to deny it! Idistinctly saw you talking behind your hand!”Lastly, he is vain due to him "plastering back (his hair) with immense quantities of brilliantine." and “(Having a mustache that) was curled most splendidly upwards all the way along as though it had had a permanent wave put into it.”
  • "You're talking! I saw you talking! Don't try to deny it! I distinctly saw you talking behind your hand!"
  • "I-I have broken my nib, sir. I...I was asking Dobson if he c-could lend me one, sir."
  • E: This suggests that Captain Hardcastle is wild by "Leaping up to his feet and pointing at Boy" and "Grunting through his nose and twitching his head" (since it’s a little strange to be doing these actions/not many would do these actions), He is strict for "Giving Boy a stripe" and not hearing Boy out (“I'd shut up if I were you!... You'll only get yourself into deeper trouble! I am giving you a Stripe!”), He is vain for caring for his looks ("plastering back (his hair) with immense quantities of brilliantine." and “(His mustache) curled most splendidly upwards all the way along as though it had had a permanent wave put into it.”
  • "I am giving you a Stripe!"
  • Final!
  • B-but!
  • (This scene is about Captain Hardcastle giving Boy a stripe)
  • L:Effectively, all of the evidence of Hardcastle proves my point, Captain Hardcastle’s personality is strict, wild, and vain.
  • "These were indeed words of doom."
  • Stripes
