  • The Bay of Pigs Invasion was an attempt to push former Cuban President Fidel Castro out of power.

  • On Jan. 1st, 1959, Fidel Castro lead his army into the capital city, Havana. He began a guerrilla war with Batista's army.
  • So Why'd The U.S. Decide To Invade?
  • President Eisenhower
  • The citizens were in support of Castro being the new president. General Batista was a corrupt and repressive dictator leader and the citizens much preferred Castro's methods. 
  • The Invasion
  • They were expecting us! We've lost 114 men and we must surrender. Castro's army is too powerful
  • Castro wasn't a fan of the American government controlling much of Cuba's economy and instead pushed for them to be more independent. 
  • Castro eventually cut ties with the U.S and allied with the USSR. Because he fought back against American influence, President Eisenhower saw him as a threat to the nation, and ordered an attack. 
  • There are 1,400 Cubans that came to America after Castro took over. If we trained them, we could plan an invasion. 
  • With his army of 1,400 Cubans, newly elected President Kennedy authorized the invasion plans. Immediately everything went wrong, and the U.S army surrendered after under 24 hours of fighting.
