  • The Election of 1824 and 1828
  • We are gathered here today to decide who will be our next president. Our candidates are Henry Clay of Kentucky, Andrew Jackson of Tennessee, and John Quincy Adams of Massachusetts.
  • The Unethical Deal
  • Lets make a deal, if you promise to make me Secretary of State I'll use my power as speaker of the house to make you president . Is that a deal?
  • Well, I guess because this might be the only way I win because Jackson's so popular.
  • Adams Wins!
  • Thank you thank you. As president of the United States I would like to have a strong navy and federal government.
  • It has been decided that John Quincy Adams is now the new president of the United States! Congratulations.
  • The election of 1824 was between Henry Clay, Andrew Jackson, and John Quincy Adams. Three of the candidates were favorite sons which meant they were supported by their home states instead of the national party. This election was import because although Jackson was the most popular out of all candidates he didn't get majority votes. So in the end Congress had to decide who would be president next.
  • Two Political Parties
  • We the Democratic Republicans believe in state rights. Since many of us are frontier people, immigrants, or city workers so we can't trust the government.
  • Since Henry Clay was the speaker of the house he had lots of power. So him and Adams made a deal that he'd make Adams president with his power , as long as Adams made Clay Secretary of State. This deal was important because although it wasn't illegal but it was unethical and would later cause problems for Adams.
  • The Election of 1828
  • Thank you! As president I want voting to be open to more people, and for the government to include ordinary citizens.
  • After the deal was made Adams became president, and named Clay was named Secretary of State. Once he was elected he stated what he wanted to do with his power. First, he wanted a strong navy. Second, he wanted a strong federal government. Supporters of Jackson were furious and accused the men of making a "corrupt bargain". Because of the "corrupt bargain" and Adam's ideas people resented him and Congress rarely passed his proposals.
  • America Today
  • By 1828 disagreements started arising and two political parties formed. The Democratic Republicans who supported Jackson and the National Republicans who supported Adams. This was important because both parties started mudslinging (attempts to ruin the opponent's reputation) which lead to what we do today.
  • Well, we the National Republicans who are merchants and farmers believe in a strong central government, and federal measures because it would help the economy.
  • After the mudslinging and arguing there was another election. In this election Jackson won with flying color with 56 percent of popular vote and 178 electoral votes. This was important because by Jackson being president affected popular sovereignty by including more ordinary people in the government because he believed anyone was capable to work in the government, and opened the right to vote for white men who didn't own land. Last, in 1828 22 of the 24 states allowed their citizens to choose presidential electors.
  • Congratulations! We have our new president Andrew Jackson.
  • The election of 1824 and 1828 affected what we have today because it established/lead to new rules. For example, how white men who owned land used to be the only ones who could vote but once Jackson was elected he changed that. Or how Jackson include more ordinary people in the government which lead to many different point of views. Overall, the elections affected our government today in many good/negative ways such as opening the government to new people, or mudslinging our opponents.
