Aunt Alexandra explains that she will stay with the children for a while to give them a feminine influence. Maycomb welcomes her and she soon becomes a part of the social circle. Alexandra is proud of the Finches and spends a lot of time discussing the various families of Maycomb.
Jean Louise, stop scratching your head.
We decide it would be best for some feminine influence.
Aunt Alexandra discusses the ancestry of the town and how all the families have their quirks and eccentricities. She believes that Scout and Jem lack pride in their history, and implores Atticus to teach them more. Eventually, Alexandra makes Scout cry.
I can’t remember everything Finches are supposed to do...
I don’t want you to remember it. Forget it.
Aunt Alexandra fits in the Maycomb society like a hand into a glove but will never fit into Finch's family life
Scout stepped on something warm and it felt alive. She assumed it was a snake and called Jem to check it out for her. He looked under the bed, finding Dill hiding there. Dill told them his new father locked him in the basement in chains.
What are you doing here?
Dill?
Dill claimed his parents wouldn't miss him and they didn't need him. He begged them to not send him back. Atticus asks Scout to get more food than a pan of cold cornbread for Dill, before going next door to tell Dill’s aunt, Miss Rachel, of his whereabouts. Dill eats, then gets into Jem’s bed to sleep, but soon climbs over to Scout’s bed to talk things over.
Don't worry! You can sleep in Jem's room.
Please don't send me back or get me in trouble!
Atticus went into the living room and told the children he was going out. This was strange though because they found he had taken the car which is uncommon because he usually walks everywhere. At about 10 o'clock Scout decided she was going to look for Atticus. Jem told her not to but knew if he kept trying to stop her should would start fighting and said she could bring Dill.
When Jem, Scout, and Dill finally found Atticus they saw that a small crowd was formed and has come for Tom Robinson. Scout ran to Atticus and with out being on purpose she made Walter Cunningham called his guys off by talking about his son.
I know your son, he's in my class.
