- Bruno is very upset with his mother when she tells him that they have to leave Berlin to go to their father's new job. She tells him that they are going and there is nothing he can do about it.
- Bruno becomes friends with a young boy named Shmuel who lives at camp Out-With. He is Bruno's only friend and every day they talk. Sometimes Bruno brings him food. Shmuel likes Bruno but hates his father who is a Nazi commander,
- Bruno heard many horrible things that his father said about why the people were at Out-With camp and he was so confused and angry. He hated the Fury and he hated that his father worked for him
- One day Bruno dug a hole under the fence of the camp to help his friend Shmuel find his father. Shmuel gives him a pair of striped pajamas so they can look the same.
- Bruno does not leave. He can not leave. His mother looks for him. His sister Gretel looks for him. He is right under their noses but they don't even think that he would be at Out-With
