Stephen was living his life as a child without a family in London until the letter arrived.  He was eager "to find out about his family", and this letter was his way of doing so

Stephen was fascinated by the nature on his way to the manor, but when he talks to people about the manor, he gets a weird feeling from them and "didn't like their reaction" when he asked about the manor
Studious Stephen
The manor wasn't as luxurious as Stephen expected and Stephen thought that there was "something very odd, indeed, with the old, empty house".
While searching the house, Stephen finds a library that is full of his great uncles journals. "The notebook was obviously a diary"
Stephen, being an avid zoologist,  went out and studied all of the animals in his new home. He found some that seemed less like animals and more like mythical creatures. "Stephen wondered what kind of beast could have done such a thing".
