  • The Cuban Missile Crisis
  • it was a conflict between the U.S. the Soviet Union, and Cuba.
  • In 1962
  • After the failed bay of pigs innovation in 1961 by the Kennedy Administration.
  • Soviet Premier, Nikita Khrushchev reached a secret agreement with Cuban Premier Fidel Castro to place Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba to stop any further U.S aggression.
  • On October 27 a spy plane piloted by Major Rudolph Andreson was shot down by a Soviet missile.
  • Attorney General Robert Kennedy secretly met with Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin.
  • After negotiation, they reached the following proposal.
  • After the meeting had concluded, Dobrynin cabled Moscow saying time is of the essence and we shouldn’t miss the chance.
  • The U.S would remove its missiles from Turkey and Italy and promise to never invade Cuba, in exchange for the Soviet withdrawal from Cuba under U.N. inspection.
  • At 9 a.m the next day, a message arrived from Khrushchev saying that the Soviet missiles would be removed from Cuba.
  • The crisis was now over.
  • There was a slight communication error or split-second decision by a commander, could have thwarted all their efforts, as it nearly did if not for Vasil Arkhipovs courageous choice.
  • The Cuban Missile Crisis revealed just how fragile human politics are compared to the terrifying power they can unleash.
