- the story starts off with the womensa husband asking if she would like to go to a party

- she responds with yes but she realizes she has no dress or anything to wear to this party

- the rising action occurs when she ended up crying because she had no clothes or anything appropriate to wear to the party so her husband gives her 400 francs to go out and purchase a dress, not only that but her rich friend gives her a diamond necklace for her to wear
- resolution
- she ends up going to the party and her husband waits outside accompanied by 3 other men who were also waiting for their wives
- as shes leaving she realizes that she does not have the necklace around her neck anymore, so she freaks out looking for it and soon realizes that she had lost it, she tells her husband and even he is worried
- the solution they came up with is to make the money back to buy a similar diamond necklace, this takes them about 10 years and once they give it back the friend tells them that the necklace was merely a replica and was worth no more that 200 francs.
