The Cask of Amontillado
Storyboard Text
- Exposition
- Montresor runs into Fortunato at Carnival in Italy and ask him to help with a pipe he received that passes for Amontillado.
- Fortunato had been feeling a bit ill, but the thought of the Amontillado made the offer irresistible.
- Conflict
- Montresor explains that Forunato had insulted him and he would only settle for punishment with impunity, but never tells the reader exactly how he insulted him.
- Rising Action
- Montresor is able to lure Fortunato down to where the catacombs are and gets him to drink some of the wine in thought that it might help "ease his cough", but really just made him more gullible. Monstresor lures him father and farther into the catacombs until he is sure he will succeed with his plans of punishment.
- Climax
- When the two men reach their destination, it is revealed that there is no Amontillado. Montresor is now able to trap Fortunato in a tightly spaced "room" which is filled with very little oxygen.
- Falling Action
- Montresor starts to fill the entrance way with bricks that were hidden behind the bones and finally traps Fortunato, Fortunato thinks he is joking and that this is just one big misunderstanding.
- Resolution
- Fortunato eventually runs out of oxygen and is left dead. Montresor is able to walk away with the satisfaction of being able to finally get revenge. This shows that Montresor is an insane type of character and is much different from most other people.
