At the beginning of the book, we are told by Ian (the main character) that he needs to complete volunteer work for a certain amount of hours to pass his civics class. We learn that Ian started his placement later than everybody else
Ian is late for his volunteer job interview and is rushing through the streets to get there. The job is to serve food at a soup kitchen ( called 'The Club'). After running into a man that asks for spare change, three teenage boys stop Ian and close in on him, blocking his path. They take his shoes and tell Ian to give his coat.
After giving the boys his shoes, Ian is surprised to see the man who asked for spare change appear. The man confronts the boys, telling them to give Ian his shoes back but they refuse and continue telling him to give his coat. The man pulls out an iron boy and hits one of the boys with it. He tells the boys to give their coats and they run away. This is a starting point of Ian getting to know what type of person this man is
Ian arrives at his job location and begins to serve people. While serving, he encounters a grumpy man who complains about too much soup on his plate. Words and threats are thrown around between the man and another man. Mac ( the person who runs the kitchen) breaks up the argument.#160;
Miss Watkins, Ian's teacher, gives the class a lesson on peacemaking. She enlightens them and teaches them about how Canadians (especially Canadian soldiers) are known as 'peacemakers, not war makers'.
Later on, after finishing a shift at the soup kitchen, Ian decides to join Mac for his rounds in the streets. Ian is shocked to find out the amount of homeless people that are forced to live (and die) on the streets. He finds out that many of them have to sleep and even eat from dumpsters. Many have to stay in shelters while those who are deemed 'too crazy' have to sleep in the cold. He feels as though he lives in a whole different universe.
