Storyboard Text

  • Later on, Miss Watkins invites Ian to the front of the class to tell everyone about his volunteer placement. Some silly boys decide to make nasty comments about the homeless people but the teacher educates them on why those remarks are dehumanizing. At the end of the class, Ian is asked to interview the man who asked for spare change (called Sarge) at the beginning because he is a former soldier.
  • At the soup kitchen, Ian begins to interview Sarge. He asks questions such as the number of years he served, why he chose the job and whether he would recommend the job for someone to pursue. The questions get personal and Ian asks about where he was placed and what events took place. Sarge is uncomfortable and walks away. Ian feels guilty for perhaps pushing Sarge's boundaries.
  • When Ian gets home, he decides to research about the genocide in Rwanda. He realizes the sickening and repulsive number of people killed (800,000). He begins to contemplate and reflect on the information he finds out.
  • The next morning, Ian visits Sarge at the tents he sleeps in. They decide to get donuts and while walking back, Sarge recounts his grueling and horrifying experience in Rwanda. He talks about how the Hutus ( the ethnic majority) had ethnosupremacist ideologies against the Tutsis (minority). The Hutus believed they were superior and that each and every member of the Tutsi ethnicity needed to be wiped out. They walk on a bridge and Sarge explains how everytime he crosses an aqueduct he sees a river filled with bloated human bodies.
  • At school, Ian talks about his interview with Sarge. He talked about the UN sending and stationing soldiers in Rwanda. They talk about various genocides and massacres that have taken place (such as the Holocaust, Armenian genocide, cleansing of Bosnian Muslims. They also talk about how small acts of kindness can be done to counter evil.
  • At home, Ian takes it upon himself to research a personal story of a survivor of the Rwandan Genocide. Jacob had lost all of his family members and his arm as a result of a village attack on the Tutsis. Ian is in shock and is unable to sleep for a while due to the horrifying details describing the attack.
