Storyboard Text

  • Exposition
  • It's only a manta ray.
  • Setting:Jim Tom and Jimmy Tom live on Carib Island and spend most of their time on the reef. During the day, the beautiful, clear, calm water with colorful fish and coral and honey-brown sand. At night the moonlight hits the water as it shimmers through the night. The setting is important because without it Jimmy Tom would have never learned his lesson.

  • When I signal; come back to me fast- for I cannot go to you.
  • Dialogue: Before Jimmy Tom starts his work for the day Jim Tom tells Jimmy Tom the story of how he got paralyzed and how Jimmy's father died in the same reef they are in now. After he finishes the story he tells Jimmy Tom to come back up when he signals for him because he can't move or lose anyone else. The dialogue gives us background on Jim Tom and why he is serious/worried about Jimmy following his directions.

  • Rising Action/ Conflict
  • Dramatic Irony and External conflict:Jimmy Tom dive into the reef and started to collect the sea sponges. Jim Tom signals for Jimmy Tom to come back but he continues working. Jimmy is frightened now that he sees the shark swimming toward him. Tension starts to build not knowing if Jimmy will escape. The dramatic irony is knowing Jimmy Tom was not going to listen to Jim Tom directions. External conflict is between Jim Tom and Jimmy Tom because Jimmy Tom did not listen to him.

  • I will return to the reef to get the shells!
  • No, we will go home in the morning, The reef is not for the greedy!
  • Characterization: Jimmy Tom soon returns to the water where he found a shell that would make him twice the money he needs. Then an 8ft long conger eel grabs onto his wrist. Jimmy Tom struggled for some time, the eel didn't loosen up its grip. He remembered that he had to relax every muscle in his body. Finally, the eel unlatches himself from Jimmy Tom, he cam back to the surface because he was losing oxygen. He returns to his grandfather with blood on his arm. He demands Jim Tom to let him go back to get the shells but Jim Tom says no, they will return home the next day.

  • Falling Action
  • Character vs nature: After Jim Tom told Jimmy Tom no, they both went to sleep that night until a great white squid attacked Jim Tom. Jimmy Tom fought the great white squid before it was able to pull his grandfather off the canoe. The rest of the night they paddled back home. In the story, Jimmy Tom goes through multiple events with character v.s nature with the squid, shark, and the eel. Every time Jimmy Tom face a challenge he develops more as a character.

  • Resolution
  • Theme: Jimmy Tom and Jim Tom are both glad they made it out of the reef safe. When they got back to the island Jimmy Tom made enough money for him to buy his sloop and a new canoe for Jim Tom. They agreed to never return to the reef again. The theme in the story is "Enough is plenty" or don't be greedy be thankful for what you have.The Theme is the lesson the main character learns at the end of the story.
