There was a monster by the name of Grendel that was haunting Herot for 12 years, and upon hearing about this monster, Beowulf instantly found this as his call to action to go save the people of Herot

King Hrothgar becomes Beowulf's mentor specially when Beowulf becomes king and King Hrothgar influences him.
ORDEAL
Beowulf takes the venture to Denmark with his men by sailing from Geatland.
Beowulf fights Grendel, overpowers him and takes his arm as a trophy
Thinking he has ended the battle, the Geats throw a great feast in his honor. However, they learn there is a new foe: Grendel's mother. Beowulf’s work is not yet done.
Beowulf has to defeat Grendels mother to save the danes, to accomplish this he had to swim into her secret lair and stab her with a giant's sword

King Hrothgar gives Beowulf his finest horses and a massive amount of treasure as a reward for saving the Danes.
Beowulf ascends to the throne and becomes king of the Geats, where he rules wisely for over 50 years.
Years after he ascends to the throne Beowulf's heroic deeds are needed again. When a fire-breathing dragon threatens his land. Knowing he has lived a full life and seeing his death before him, Beowulf charges into the action and defeats the dragon, but not before he is bitten in the neck and poisoned.
Beowulf's body and a massive treasure were burned on a funeral pyre overlooking the sea. He dies a hero’s death, and his stories are told over generations.
