  • Wow, that's...... weirdly convenient.

  • Evolution: change over time concerned with the origin of species Mutation: a random change in the genetic makeup in an individual Natural Selection: the process by which selective pressure acts on a specific characteristic, allowing individuals with that characteristic to survive and reproduce, leading to an increase of that characteristic within a population Convergent Evolution: a similar characteristic evolves independently of two distinct lineages. Often results when both lineages face the same selective pressures and environmental challenges.Divergent Evolution: when species of the same origin differentiated their functions to suit their environment, resulting in more species.Coevolution: When two or more species evolve in correlation to one another Biochemistry: The study of genetic material and relationships between diverse species and similar biochemical characteristics that suggest it derives from a common ancestor

  • Before, our inability to digest lactose in adulthood was a shared biochemical characteristic between us and mammals. Like, look at pigs! They are able to digest high levels of lactose as babies, but that amount decreases when they grow.
  • I used to love lactose as a baby....
  • Definitely! Chickens, who aren't mammals, cannot consume lactose whatsoever, and rats experience a similar lactose intolerance that we do! They can tolerate about 25% of lactose in the diet before their digestion is affected.
  • LACTOSE!!!!!
  • Lactose? Hm... okay, but not too much. Any more will not be pretty for me.
  • Lactose? Ew, no.
  • Additionally, since lactose intolerance is an autosomal recessive disorder, some infants aren’t able to produce lactase, but it also means that it’s easy to pass on because only one copy of the altered gene is enough to produce lactase.
  • Humans' ability of digesting lactose has evolved rapidly. Most babies can digest milk without getting any of its negative effects such as an upset stomach due to the production of lactase.
  • Right! In adulthood, this enzyme is turned off causing lactose intolerance which is a shared biochemical characteristic among most mammals. Humans are the only mammals that have passed down this ability to their offspring.
  • Take that!!
