Equality lives in a world where he was never taught that the individual’s feeling, beliefs, and interests are important. In fact, despite the fact that he felt as though he could do so much more, he was given the job of a street sweeper. When I first read this I was thinking about how flawed this system was, because some people have natural talents that will be wasted.
Chapter 2
Equality finds a hiden room with his friend. I think the room is an old subway station. This room becomes his safe place, and he writes a diary of his thoughts that he isn't supposed to have. It was this point where I started to think about how open minded he is for a socioty like this.
Chapter 3
Equality finally talks to the girl that he kind of had a crush on, known as Liberty 7-3000. He referred to her in his mind as "The Golden One" (Rand 41) This is because she has gold hair, but more importantly he gave her this nickname because she stands out to him in a way no one else did.
Chapter 4
As Equality tired to sleep, he remembered seeing a man be burned alive for saying the "Unspeakable Word" (Rand 51) The fact that the Saint of Pyre was happy whilst being burned alive was what I found interesting because it really showed how even though he was being killed, he didn't care because he had finally been enlightened.
Equality discovers an old Lightbulb in the old subway station. I think that his discovery of the light officially represents his enlightenment. I think this because right after this the book says "Yes we can. We do. We have fought against saying it, but now it is said. We do not care. We forget all men" (Rand 54)
Equality talks to liberty again and learns that she had given him the nickname of "The Unconquered" (Rand 56) when she thought about him. I think this nickname shows how Liberty looks up to him in a way that she feels as though he is one of the only people in this world whose mind has not been corrupted by the beliefs of their society.
