- JuneJune is the protagonist of The Handmaid's Tale. She was married with a young daughter before she was taken and forced to become a Handmaid. She is sent to a man and given the name Offred. The novel is mostly written from her perspective. Throughout the story she shows that she is not happy with the way women are treated in Gilead, however she doesn't resist much as survival is more important to her.
- JanineJanine is another Handmaid in the Handmaid's Tale. She has her eye removed and is subjected to gang rape at the beginning of the story for her defiance. After that, she becomes severely mentally ill. She acts as an example of what the Gileadean regime does to people who do not follow the orders of its leaders.

- The Commander (Fred Waterford)The Commander is the man that June is assigned to in the Handmaid's Tale. He initially seems like a victim of the system himself, until it is discovered that he had a large part to play in the establishment of Gilead. He is surprisingly friendly to Offred, and he breaks many rules such as having contraband items and befriending a Handmaid.
