  • Slide: 1
  • Hey! I don't see any fish! What happened?
  • The fishermen caught them all!
  • Slide: 2
  • Fishermen have been catching more and more fish every year! Scientists predict that the ocean could be drastically altered if people continue fishing the way they are.
  • That's horrible!
  • I know! And the problem is, fishermen are not willing to stop because they are getting so much money, and if the government banned fishing, millions of people would lose their jobs.

  • Some people do, and methods have been tried to try and conserve the ocean, such as farmed fishing, which involves raising fish in pens. This does not work, though, because the farmed fish are fed wild fish. The farmed fish also lose their survival skills, so when put back in the wild, the fish die. Another method is enforcing fish quotas, or limiting the amount of fish that fishermen can catch. This does not work either because most of the fish that fishermen catch are already dead, so the fishermen would be throwing overboard dead fish, which is a huge waste. Another method tried is limiting the amount of time fishermen could fish, but this makes the fishermen want to stay closer to home, and not waste their fishing time going to distant waters. One last method tried is to close off one fishing zone, waiting for it to recover, then opening it back up and closing off another fishing zone. This does not work either because it is hard to tell how long it would take for a fishing zone to recover. We have yet to find a perect solution, and we might never.
  • Do people not care about the oceans?
  • Wow! I never knew that! I will try to conserve ocean wildlife by eating seafood sustained food, not fishing and eating endangered species, and limiting how much seafood I eat.
