  • The Greeks and Romans did not base race off of skin color alone; instead, race had more to do with environmental factors and upbringing. People of different skin colors were not divided into racial categories. To them, they were all one people.
  • The concept of race and ethnicity in ancient Greece and Rome has been debated for centuries. Today we view race by the color of ones skin; however, in the ancient times it wasn't quite as simple. We cannot truly know what it meant to live in Athens as a person marked as “non-Greek,” or how that person would have defined their own identity because of the lack of evidence. What we can do is look at the work of different historians such as Jonathan Hall, who made the conclusion that ethnicity depends on what people say, not what they do based on the little historical evidence available.
  • Throughout more recent history, we've seen far too many instances of discrimination and division amongst racial categories that causes tension and build hate in individuals. Leaving many wondering why ancient Greece and Rome was so different from what we are accustomed to learning about within history.
  • Maybe everyone would be better off if we went back to the ancient Greeks and Romans ideology of race.
