  • Scarlet Ibis
  • By. Jeremiah Shelton
  • I-Imagery
  • Style
  • This scene shows a miserable tone. This scene is when Doodle dies because his brother ran far away from him for himself not to get hurt. The story quotes "Doodle! Doodle! I cried, shaking him, but there was no answer but the ropy rain."(42) This is why this day was so miserable.
  • T-Tone
  • The author uses a beautiful word choice to describe the Scarlet Ibis. This is when when doodle found the Scarlet Ibis dead. . "Even death did not mar its grace, for it layon the earth like a broken vase of red flowers, and we stood around it, awed byits exotic beauty."(21)
  • This shows imagery at the beginning of the story. "It's strange that all this is still so clear to me, now that that summer has since fled and time has had its way. A grindstone stands where the bleeding tree stood, just outside the kitchen door, and now if an oriole sings in the elm, its song seems to die up in the leaves, a silvery dust."(2)
  • This show foreshadowing at the beginning of the story. "The last graveyard flowers were blooming, and their smell drifted [through] our house, speaking softly the names of our dead."(p1) This is foreshadowing Doodle's death.
  • T-Theme
  • That family is everything because Brother was using pride against Doodle to help him walk but it really means you never let something take over your love with family.
