- Before the rebellion of the sepoys, the British had begun to usurp control of the Hindu princely states by convincing Indians that Britain held a dominant position in Indian political, economic, and cultural life. Hindu society was influenced and westernized by the introduction of western ideas.
- The cause of the rebellion was the introduction of the new Enfield rifles. To load it, the sepoys had to bite off the ends of the lubricated cartridges, and the grease used to lubricate the cartridges was rumored to be a mixture of pigs’ and cows’ lard. To come into oral contact with it is an insult to both Muslims and Hindus.
