The first civilization in India...

Storyboard Text

  • Hello James!
  • Hello John!
  • James, do you know about the Indus Valley Civilization?
  • No, I don't know about the Indus Valley Civilization.
  • The Indus Valley Civilization developed in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent about 4700 years ago from 2700-2500 BCE. Its first cities were Harappa and Mohenjo-daro. It covered parts of modern day India and Pakistan.
  • What was the civilization known for?
  • The Indus Valley Civilization was known for its town planning, grid system, drainage system and art & craft. Some of the important buildings of the Indus Valley Civilization are the Great Bath at Mohenjo-daro, a large granary to the west of the Great Bath, a brick dockyard at Lothal, etc. In art & craft, the people made bronze figurines such as the bronze Dancing Girl from Mohenjo-daro, ornaments, beads, seals and terracotta figurines. The people in the civilization developed a pictographic script. The social life of the Indus Valley Civilization included class differences and trade & contact. The religious practices included mother goddess, fertility goddess and the horned god on the seals.
  • What led to the decline of the civilization?
  • Around 1750 BCE, the civilization began to decline. The reasons that caused the civilization to decline might be huge floods, expansion of the neighbouring desert, less efficiency of planning and construction or the change in the course of the Indus River.
  • Wow! The Indus Valley Civilization was amazing. Thank you John for letting me know about this civilization.
  • Okay James. I'll see you tomorrow. Bye!
  • Bye John!
