  • Tinker v. Des Moines Supreme Court Case
  • Take off those armbands now!!
  • We’re not taking them off!
  • But we’re wearing these in protest of the Vietnam War!
  • it’s our right! We don’t need to take them off just because you asked!
  • Description: John and Mary Tinker and their friend Chris wore black wristbands in protest of the Vietnam War. The school officials told them to take the wristbands off and when they didn’t, they were suspended. Their parents then sued the school saying that what they did violated the students’ Freedom of Speech in the First Amendment.
  • Oh really I didn’t expect that, what was the final verdict?
  • Did you hear? The Justices sided with the students on this case!
  • Although their freedom is limited, they can still express themselves as long as it doesn’t interfere with school related activities.
  • They said that students have the right to self expression as long as what they wear doesn’t disrupt the school environment or the students.
  • Description: The Supreme Court ruled against the school on this case by saying that as long as whatever the students wear doesn't disturb the school environment, they can wear it. Because of this case, students in school are now allowed to freely express themselves. Although the level of expression is limited, we still get to wear the things that we want thanks to this case.
