- In 1947, HUAC, an investigative organization, turned its attention toward film and Hollywood. They'd ask directors, actors, writers and others in the industry to testify what their political beliefs were. Some refused to answer which HUAC found suspicious. In return, these actors, directors, etc. issued a statement that said something like, the U.S can keep its liberty or HUAC, it can't keep both. But most were concerned and said they wouldn't hire any communist sympathizers.
- THE HEAD OF HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS THEN GOT WORRIED ABOUT THE IMPACT HUAC WOULD HAVE ON THEIR INDUSTRY. SO THEY STATED THEY WOULDN'T HIRE COMMUNIST AND COMMUNIST SYMPATHISERS

- ANYONE WHO WAS BLACK LISTED WAS NO LONGER HIRED BY ANYONE WHO WORKED IN THE FILM INDUSTRY

- The spy cases start to arise. They believed people from important government posts were spies for the Soviet Union. This particular case, The ALger case involved a state department offical who worked as an advisor for the president.
- THE FORMER COMMUNIST, WHITTAKER CHAMBERS, ACCUSED HISS OF PASSING SECRETS TO THE SOVIET UNION. A FEDERAL GRAND JURY THEN CONVICTED HISS OF PERJURY IN 1950. EVEN SO, HE STILL ACTED INNOCENT. BUT BECAUSE OF SECRET DOCUMENTS THAT WERE MADE PUBLIC IN 1955, THEY WERE INDICATED GUILTY AND PROBABLY SPIED FOR THE SOVIET UNION.
- HISS IS A SPY FOR THE SOVIET UNION
- YOU'RE ALL COMMUNIST SPIES!!!
- HE USED HIS POWER TO SEARCH. AND EVEN THOUGH HIS ACCUSATIONS WEREN'T CONCRETE, HE MADE THOUSANDS LOSE JOBS AND RUINED MANY LIVES. THIS ENDED THOUGH, WHEN HE TRIED ACCUSING THE MILITARY AND HIS TACTICS WERE THEN REVEALED.
- McCARTHY BELIEVED THAT THERE WERE COMMUNIST SPIES EVERYWHERE. HE BELIEVED ANY GATHERING GROUP WERE COMMUNIST, ESPECIALLY IF THEY WERE DIVERSE. HE NEVER OFFERED EVIDENCE BUT WAS STILL ALLOWED IN A POSITION OF POWER.
- THE MEDIA TOOK THIS AND RAN WITH IT. RESTAURANTS, EVENTS, AND EVEN TOURIST DESTINATIONS TOOK THIS AS A THEME. HENCE THE NAME, ATOMIC AGE.
- THE FCDA WAS THE FEDERAL CIVIL DEFENSE ADMINISTRATION. THEY WERE IN CHARGE OF HELPING PEOPLE IN CASE AN NUCLEAR ATTACK.
- DUCK AND COVER!
- ONE ADVANCE THEY MADE TO HELP WAS A VIDEO DEMONSTRATION OF DUCK AND COVER, A TACTIC THAT WAS SAID TO PROTECT ONE FROM AN EXPLOSION.
