  • Back in the early 1800's it was regulated of the power to operate steamboats on the Hudson River in New York.
  • Gibbons wanted a piece of the action as he held within a federal license to operate steamboat's from New York to New Jeresy.
  • Ogden wasn't going to have it so he filed a complainment towards Gibbons to stop him.
  • The Supreme Court decided to step in on behave of the controversy moreover with Ogden arguing that he had an exclusive right over Gibbons to operate rather than Gibbons fighting back with the Constitutions interstate commerce clause gave the federal government to regulate commerce between the states.
  • The Court sided on Gibbons side as decision was made that "Congress had the power to regulate commerce between the states" and "Further defined commerce to include waterways.
  • The outcome after the case was finalized as for the decision was supported towards the growth of a national economy rooted in free enterprise and competition in the marketplace rather than monopiles granted towards to the specific individuals or company.
