  • One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that jumping to conclusions is harmful. The first example is when woman one shares to the residents that Les Goodman stares at the sky at night as if he is looking for something, so the neighbors jump to the idea that Les is the alien (pg 77). They shut him out from the neighborhood which causes a tense atmosphere and suspicion that harms their abilities to communicate civilly. The second reason is when a dark figure was approaching Maple street and Charlie, filled with fear, shoots the figure who is later found to be Pete Van Horn (pg. 82-83). Since Charlie had jumped to the conclusion that the monster was real, and that he was right, he killed Van Horn who was the only person who knew what happened to the surrounding streets. Finally, after Charlie killed Pete Van Horn he, after the residents mob around him, says that Tommy is the alien. All of the residents breakout into a fight, throwing bricks, shooting rifles, yelling, painting a scene of destruction based of the conclusions they quickly made and believed were right (pg. 84-85). This is why jumping to conclusions is harmful is one of the main themes in "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street".
