The climax is the turning point of the story. The narrator wakes the old man up. After hearing his heart beat, the narrator kills the old man, and then hides his body under the floorboard. "Finally it stopped. The old man was dead."

Falling action starts to wrap up the story. The cops came after some neighbors reported screaming. They ask if everything is ok. The narrator tells them that he had a nightmare. "The scream, I said, was my own. I had a dream."

Resolution is where the conflict gets wrapped up. The narrator lets the officers in to search the house. The narrator is really confident thinking that they'll never know he killed the old man. Once they get to the room though, the narrator hears a heart beat and starts to worry. Then, he freaks out and tells the officers where he hid the body. "I admit the deed! Here,here! It is the beating of his hideous heart!"
