- "They brought the kids from the orphanage here?" asked Harry, who could not imagine a less cozy spot for a day trip.
- "What do you think?" asked Dumbledore. He might have been asking Harry's opinion on whether it was a good site for a picnic.
- "We need to get you up to the school, sir ... Madam Pomfrey ..."
- "No," said Dumbledore."It is ... Professor Snape whom I need ... but I do not think ... I can walk very far just yet ..."
- "You care about me saying "Mudblood" when I'm about to kill you?"
- "Yes, I do,"
- Harry could smell salt and hear rushing waves; a light, chilly breeze ruffled his hair as he looked out at moonlit sea and star-strewn sky. He was standing upon a high outcrop of dark rock, water foaming and churning below him. He glanced over his shoulder. A towering cliff stood behind them, a sheer drop, black and faceless.
- "Luckily," said Lupin hoarsely, "Ron, Ginny, and Neville ran into us almost immediately and told us what had happened. We found the Death Eaters minutes later, heading in the direction of the Astronomy Tower.
- Once back under the starry sky, Harry heaved Dumbledore on to the top of the nearest boulder and then to his feet. Sodden and shivering, Dumbledore's weight still upon him, Harry concentrated harder than he had ever done upon his destination: Hogsmeade.
- "I still don't get why he didn't turn you in for using that book,"
- "I don't think he wanted to associate himself with that book," said Hermione. "I don't think Dumbledore would have liked it very much if he'd known. And even if Snape pretended it hadn't been his, Slughom would have recognised his writing at once.
- Malfoy looked as though he was fighting down the urge to shout, or to vomit. He gulped and took several deep breaths, glaring at Dumbledore, his wand pointing directly at the latter's heart. Then, as though he could not help himself, he said, "I had to mend that broken Vanishing Cabinet that no one's used for years.
- Malfoy obviously hadn't expected more people to be on the watch; he seemed to have exhausted his supply of Darkness Powder, at any rate. A fight broke out, they scattered and we gave chase. One of them, Gibbon, broke away and headed up the tower stairs--"
- All lessons were suspended, all examinations postponed. Some students were hurried away from Hogwarts by their parents over the next couple of days--the Patil twins were gone before breakfast on the morning following Dumbledore's death and Zacharias Smith was escorted from the castle by his haughty-looking father.
- "He knew," said Harry bitterly. "He knew when I used Sectumsempra. He didn't really need Legilimency ...
