- One major theme of "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that fear and suspicion can destroy. For example, when Les was being confronted by the Maple Street residents, Les's trust and friendship was destroyed. This is because when Les's car started up unexpectedly, it caused suspicion and fear toward Les. Another example of the theme includes when Charlie shot his neighbor (Pete Van Horn) without confirming who he was. Charlie was scared and shot impulsively which caused him to destroy his neighbors life as a result. The last piece of evidence proving the theme is when the aliens are shown controlling Maple Streets lights and machines. The aliens watched the humans blame and hurt each other with the chaos the aliens caused by turning off and on the lights/cars. In conclusion, the scenes explained the major theme of "The Monster Are Due on Maple Street", which is fear and suspicion can destroy. In the end of the story, not only were the peoples lives destroyed, but the society Maple Street was destroyed as well.
