Ghost is the first novel in the award-winning "Track" series, published in 2016. The novel is recounted from the point of view of 7th grader Castle Cranshaw (Ghost), an African-American youngster dealing with the effects of an unfortunate incident of domestic violence.
EXPOSITION
Castle and his teammates bond over personal stories and Castle finally feels seen and understood. Things go well until Coach sees a “wanted” poster of Castle in the store. He threatens to kick him off the team. Castle thinks Coach can't understand what he's going through. Coach reveals his own personal trauma and Castle realizes that he can rise above his situation.

Castle goes with Coach to the sporting goods store and apologizes.With a renewed commitment to “stay on track”, Castle is allowed back on the team in time to compete in their first race. The story ends with Ghost preparing for the race and realizing that for once, he is not running from his past but towards his future.

Castle's mother agrees to let him join the squad on with the requirement that he stay out of trouble. During lunch, Castle, on the other hand, gets aggressively abused and responds by assaulting the individual who attacked him. He told the principal to contact his coach and make preparations for him to be picked up. Coach Brody allows Castle to keep functioning on the team, offers helpful guidance, and disciplines him with extra running drills.
Castle and his fellow players bond over personal narratives, and Castle feels seen and understood for the first time. Everything is going effortlessly until Coach notices a "wanted" poster of Castle in the store. He threatens to expel himself from the team. Castle believes Coach fails to understand what he is going through. Castle realizes he is able to rise above his situation once Coach demonstrates his own personal pain.
Seeing his friends' expensive running shoes, Castle cuts the tops of his sneakers off to make them lighter. This ends up resulting in more bullying at school. Castle leaves his school, embarrassed, and steals running shoes from a local sporting goods store. Castle goes on to bond with his friends and enjoys being on the track team as he gains trust.
