  • Heir to the throne of Austro-Hungarian Empire, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife are assassinated in Sarajevo June 28, 1914.The Austria-Hungarian government saw the assassination as the Serbians helping the Bosnian terrorists in the attack.

  • The Austria-Hungarian government made harsh demands on the Serbians, which the Serbians rejected, causing Austria-Hungary to declare war against them in July 1914.Russia began to mobilize their military a few days later to protect Serbia which caused Germany to do the same for Austria Hungary. Then, France and Britain joining to help their ally, Russia. Japan declared war on Germany and the U.S.A. decided to remain neutral.

  • September 15, 1914 the first trenches were dug. During the battle of Verdun in (Feb-Dec 1916) and the battle of Somme (July-Nov 1916) there were an estimated 2 million casualties total from the both of these battles. The new technology and industrialization killed more soldiers. Even creating these resources for chemical warfare was deadly for the manufacturers. There were no breakthroughs on either side.

  • The Zimmerman Telegram was discovered by Britain in April 1917 which caused the U.S. to join the Allies. By 1918 about 2 million U.S. troops arrived in Europe. The fresh U.S. troops, supplies, and money was a turning point in the war which gave the Allies the final push they needed to defeat the Central powers.

  • In Dec 1917, Russia lost over two million soldiers because they were poorly equipped, the serfs were furious their tax money was used for no change. The Bolsheviks and their leader Vladimir Lenin took over the government and pulled Russia out of the war by signing an armistice with Germany

  • Germany was forced to admit defeat since the Ottomans and Austria-Hungary pulled out of the war leaving Germany alone in the Central powers. So on June 28, 1919 the Treaty of Versailles was signed, formally ending WW1. It was easiest to blame someone for the war and Germany was the victim. They demanded financial restitution for the whole thing, about $269 billion today which crushed Germany's economy.
