  • In 1144, the Muslims conquered the crusader state of Edissa. This made Europe so alarmed that the pope called for a second crusade.
  • This second crusade failed. There were many reasons for it, like the crusade leaders argued and they were unable to gain the local support of the Muslims.
  • After the Second Crusade failed, Saladin, a Muslim leader, grew in power. In 1187, Saladin recaptured Jerusalem.
  • Heh, mine now.
  • The fall of Jerusalem provoked a third crusade. It was organized by the rulers of England, France, and Germany, and there for called, The Crusade of the Kings. King Richard I, called the Lionheart, was the leader of this crusade. He won Important battles and established a courteous relationship with Saladin.
  • Saladin and Richard signed a truce that ended the third crusade. Christians could travel, and Saladin would respect Crusader states, but Saladin would keep Jerusalem.
