O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name! Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.
Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?
Romeo is now watching Juliet. Juliet thinks that she is alone and starts talking about Romeo. Romeo, in an aside, asks himself weather he should keep listening or speak.
Romeo decides that it is time to talk as he has heard enough from Juliet he now knows that she loves him and he declares that for her love he will no longer be a Montague because Juliet says that the only thing keeping them apart is their families.
I take thee at thy word. Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptized; Henceforth I never will be Romeo.
What man art thou that, thus bescreened in night. So stumblest on my counsel?
My ears have yet not drunk a hundred words Of that tongue’s utterance, yet I know the sound. Art thou not Romeo, and a Montague?
By a name I know not how to tell thee who I am. My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself, Because it is an enemy to thee. Had I it written, I would tear the word.
Romeo tells her who he is and Juliet responds saying that she barely knows Romeo and has barely heard 100 word from him mouth yet she knows his voice.
