In "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is "Mankind is it's own worst enemy." One of the many things proving this is the theme is when Charlie shot and killed Peter Van Horn on page 83. He shot him because he thought he was the monster when in reality the only monster was themselves. My next piece of evidence is after Charlie killed Pete Van Horn he blamed Tommy on page 84, quote "It's...it's the kid. It's Tommy. He's the one" Charlie blamed Tommy in order to get himself out of any consequences from killing Pete Van Horn and this is selfish because he could have got Tommy killed. My last piece of evidence is the close camera shots of violence on page 85. In these shots we see Steve getting punched, a rifle firing, and a fist clenching showing the coming of violence insinuating that they started turning on each other and killing each other. In conclusion, all of this evidence of people being violent and willing to kill others to save themselves points to one of the main themes being "Mankind is it's own worst enemy."
