Storyboard Text

  • The Battle of Thermopolye, which was the most influential battle in the Persian Wars, saw the Greeks destroying two Persian assaults before finally retreating. 300 Spartans stayed behind, and were encircled and destroyed by archers and infantry. The Greek infantry would live to fight another day.
  • The Persian Wars were a major point in Greek history because Greece was saved from Persian rule. The wars also unified Greek city-states, leading to the Delian League and the Peloponnesian War.
  • The Peloponnesian War was started by Athens getting over confident and creating an empire. Years of war between Athens and Sparta resulted in an Athenian defeat. The Greek city-states were very weak and were easy targets for the Macedonian Empire, which led a conquest of Persia.
  • The Athenians were surrounded by land and by sea by the Spartans, resulting in a massive food shortage. Athens held out, but eventually surrendered to the Spartans.

  • The Battle of Gaugamela saw the Macedonians largely outnumbered by Persians. However, Alexander the Great charged straight at Darius, king of Persia. The king ran for it, and the Persians gave up without a leader.
  • Alexander the Great took over Greece and Macedonia after his father's death. He gained Greek support through promising to destroy Persia, a rival.After 2 years of war, the Greeks ruled the largest empire in history at that point.
