- Francie loves the library and visits it quite often. Despite the library's looks, Francie adores it. Her goal is to read every book in alphabetical order, not even skipping the dry ones.
- When I get a house, I will decorate it just like this!
- Francie stopped reading when she saw Frank and his horse Bob. Francie loved the horse almost as much as she loved reading. Frank was a lovely man whom many girls had a crush on. Francie imagined that if Frank could turn into a horse, it would look like Bob.
- This is Francie's and Neely's dad, Johnny. Johnny is quite popular for his looks and charisma. He works as a singing waiter but spends most of his money on drinks.

- Johnny starts to talk about how it was his dream to be a singer, but his mother told him to be grateful that he's a waiter. He told Francie that he was unhappy and never wanted a family in the first place. That made Francie very upset.

- Francie went to visit Flossie at the glove factory she worked at. Flossie has to support her mother and her brother, Henny. Henny has consumption and is dying, so Flossie has to work hard because Henny can't work. But, in Francie's eyes, Henny looks normal and healthy. She tells Henny that he looks good, but that upsets him more.
- You're looking good, Henny, and I mean it!
- You're just saying that! Leave me alone
- Flossie also sews costumes for a masquerade ball she attends every Saturday night. Francie admired all of the dresses. Flossie had a versatile collection of fabrics that she would use. Flossie's creations always had sleeves to cover the arm she burnt as a child.
