- Francie was very excited to see that Aunt Sissy stopped by for a visit. She loved Sissy and was fascinated by her interesting life. Sissy has had 3 husbands and 10 kids who died in childbirth. Sissy brought Francie a gift from the rubber factory she worked at.
- I promise I will be back by the first of the month!
- I wish you could stay longer!
- Mama and Francie begin to plan the meals for the week. They mostly eat food like stale bread, condensed milk, coffee, onions, and potatoes. Mama knew how to make many different types of meals out of stale bread. On Saturdays, they would eat fried meat! Francie also loved tangerines but should only get those on Christmas. When she was tired of the taste of food, she would spend an extra penny to buy a pickle, and the food would taste good again.
- Mama sent Francie and Neely out to go get food for the week. They first went to Werner's to go get meat from an impatient butcher. Francie got 10 cents worth of chopped round steak, and her request seemed to annoy the butcher. Next, they went to another butcher Hassler, who was much nicer than the first. They ordered a 5-cent soup bone. They also went to the grocer to get veggies.
- On Saturday, Francie gets to sleep in her favorite spot, the front room. She loves to listen to the sounds of the house and watch people as they walk by her neighborhood. She also loved listening to her Mama and Papa talk in the kitchen. She liked listening to her Papa talk about work since the family didn't talk a lot. She would also watch the mysterious Mr. Tomony, who was a wealthy man living next to poor people, come home.
